WEDDING FACTS
- Before the marriage, the couple’s engagement has to be publicly declared on 3 separate occasions, usually in a church.
- The wedding would usually start at least one day before the ceremony with lots of drinking, song, speeches, and merrymaking.
- Before the end of the ceremony, the bridesmaids would take the bride to her bridal bed and undress her, leaving her only with her bridal headdress.
- It is customary for the groom to put a gift to his bride on the bridal bed. Today it is also common for the bride to do the same for the groom.
- In the past when the couple is in bed together the priest had to bless them one last time and the couple would drink from the bridal cups to seal their marriage.
